Can a driveway gate run on solar power?

Yes, a driveway gate can run on solar power. The panel doesn't run the motor. It charges a battery, and the battery runs the motor. Kodiak Gates & Iron, a custom iron shop in Caldwell, Idaho, installs solar gate openers, including on gates we didn't build.

That one fact clears up most of the worry about solar. The panel never has to lift the gate. It just has to put back, over the day, the little bit of charge the gate used.

Why does solar work so well on a gate?

Because a gate opener only works for a few seconds at a time. It runs while the gate moves, then sits almost idle until the next car. Even a gate that opens a few dozen times a day only runs its motor for a few minutes in 24 hours.

So a small panel can keep up with a much bigger motor. The battery does the heavy lifting, and the sun refills it.

The questions that decide a solar gate are really questions about the gate. How heavy is it? Does it swing or slide? How often does it open? How much sun does that post get in the darkest month? Those are questions for the shop that builds and hangs gates, not a catalog.

Will a solar gate work through an Idaho winter?

Yes, if it's sized for winter. Winter is what we plan around, not something the system just hopes to survive.

Days are short, the sun is low, cold batteries hold less charge, and a panel under snow collects nothing until the snow slides off. A system sized for July will let you down in December. A system sized for the darkest weeks works all year.

That comes down to where the panel goes. We look at the angle, whether it sits high and steep enough to shed snow, and whether a tree, a hill or the house shades it on a winter afternoon.

How many times a day can a solar gate open?

It depends on the panel and battery, so we count first. One open and one close is one cycle. Count everyone: your family, deliveries, visitors, trades and the school run.

A busy family driveway needs more panel and more battery. A cabin gate that opens twice on Friday and twice on Sunday needs very little. Either one works. Guessing is what causes problems.

Can solar save me from digging a trench to the gate?

Often, yes, and that's the main reason many people choose it. Running power to a gate means a trench from your nearest power all the way out to the post.

On a long rural driveway, that trench may have to cross the driveway itself, sprinkler lines, landscaping, a ditch or rock. Solar skips all of that. The only question is how much sun that one post gets. On a short driveway next to power, a power line is often simpler. We decide that at your gate.

What happens when the battery runs low?

You can still open the gate by hand. Every opener has a manual release for a dead battery or a power outage. We show you where it is and how to use it when we finish the install.

Some openers can also be set to stay open when the battery runs low instead of staying shut. That's a good choice if being locked in is worse than being left open. Read more in our guide What happens to an electric gate in a power outage?

Can my gate be switched to solar?

Yes, and that's the most common job. Your gate, posts and hinges are already there. We add the opener, the battery, the panel and the controls.

First we check that the gate and the hinge post can handle an opener, because a motor pushes and stops a gate in ways a hand never did. A gate that sags, a post that moves or a latch you have to lift gets fixed before the opener goes on. If a mount has to be made for your gate, Jose builds it to fit. See our gate automation service.

    Who does the work?

Kodiak Gates & Iron is a family run iron shop in Caldwell, Idaho. Jose Luis Dominguez started in the trade at 19 and has been a licensed contractor since 2007.

The person who measures your gate also builds the bracket and installs the opener. Most opener companies don't weld, and most welders don't install openers. We do both, so you get one job from one shop instead of two companies pointing at each other.

    What does your driveway decide?

We come to you. The drive out is part of the job, not a reason to say no. We work in Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Star, Kuna, Garden City, Caldwell, Nampa, Middleton, Garden Valley, Bogus Basin, Cascade, Donnelly, McCall and Tamarack.

The panel is the same from one driveway to the next. What changes is the gate's weight and width, swing or slide, how often it opens, how far the nearest power is, what a trench would cross, the slope, and how much winter sun that spot gets. A flat lot next to power and a foothills driveway use the same parts and are two very different jobs. We check all of it at your gate.

Kodiak provides first year maintenance at no cost, when Kodiak did the installation.

Have three things ready: a photo of your gate and post as they are today, about how many times a day the gate opens, and where your nearest power is. If the gate isn't built yet, tell us how wide the opening is and which way the ground slopes. If another shop built your gate, that's fine. We work on those too.
